2nd : Safe AND Sustainable Routes to Schools Rally :
corner of Evergreen and Miller -
8:00 am - 7:00 pm :
Let's give $900,000 back to the Safe Routes to Schools fund !
JOIN us to convince our Supervisors to give our dedicated DPW staff the funding they need to work with our community to make low cost, low impact pedestrian AND bay friendly improvements to Evergreen!
Does ANYONE really want or need a concrete slab that will destroy our semi rural environment AND damage sensitive creek habitat of endangered species?
Marin County is the Richest County in the state - with a BUDGET surplus - why do we need to pick the pockets of poorer communities to keep our kids and seniors safe?
Steve Kinsey, our Supervisor, has stated that he wants the current sidewalk project to go forward, because "that is the only way the County can be reimbursed for money already spent..."
Still, there is majority community opposition for the current design, a raised, impervious sidewalk with curbs and gutters that will :
- cover up green pathways, reduce the amount of open earth area that filters storm water
- add storm water runoff and pollutants to Reed Creek, which contains federally protected endangered species.
- change the physical structure of a street with a 100% safety record, to be more like an area of the street where a child was brushed by a car
- reduce the amount of shared road space for wide strollers and bicyclists
- destroy our neighborhood's semi rural character.
The Board of Supervisors will vote to approve the project soon.
If they approve the project, we will have no option but to sue the County to protect the health of Reed Creek, our citizens who currently travel along Evergreen and our semi-rural environment - as the County has given the County an exemption from CEQA - for "existing facilities" - when no concrete sidewalk with curbs and gutters exists!

For Evergreen : Forever Green
Help prevent the forced construction of a 9,000 square foot concrete sidewalk along Evergreen Avenue which many residents state is unnecessary and unwanted, will add storm water runoff pollutants to Reed Creek and the Bay, and destroy the semi rural character of the Homestead Valley community.
This sidewalk will cover up an already existing dedicated path made of grass, which protects our watershed.
The proposed construction is being funded by a $900,000 Safe Routes to Schools grant, which was awarded to an application that contained false statements.
Many Evergreen residents would like to see some funding go toward making another street in our community, such as Reed or Montford, as pedestrian friendly as Evergreen - or go towards serving a community with a legitimate need.
Please send us an email to show your support for this effort.
